FAQs and Policies
What are my payment options?
First, send us an email with your name and address so we can give you a shipping estimate. Then we can send you a request for
funds through PayPal (we have other options). To use PayPal we do require you to have a U.S. PayPal account with a confirmed
address. If you don’t already have a PayPal account it’s easy to sign up for one. A confirmed address means that PayPal has
checked the address in your user profile against the billing address used by your credit card company. This makes it harder for a
thief to use your credit card. This is a good thing!
If you are not familiar with Pay Pal, it is a SAFE, FREE SERVICE used to transfer funds via e-mail, using a variety of funding sources.
For more information about Pay Pal, visit their site at https://www.paypal.com/
What other payment options do I have?
We can also accept VISA, Mastercard, American Express or Discover cards by phone. You can also pay by mailing a Check or
Money Order-Just make sure you call or email us to let us know which mirror(s) you’re buying so we can calculate the shipping.
This is the slowest way because of the time it takes for the payment to reach us, then after the check is deposited it can take up to 10
days for it to fund into our account before we can ship the art work.
What is your satisfaction and return policy?
We like to keep things simple. If you’re not satisfied with your purchase you can return it to us, in the same package we used, within
5 days of delivery, for a full refund of the purchase price of the art itself (not the shipping). In plain terms that means you are
responsible for shipping both directions (beats walking!).
Something to keep in mind…we work with a variety of materials, many of which are broken, scratched, or damaged to begin with. It’
s the nature of our work and sometimes, that is the very thing that sparked our interest.
Mirror Flaws - Grout is cement mixed with sand. It’s a terrible environment for a mirror! But every mirror has some type of barely
noticeable flaw. Sometimes it’s a little nick in the silver backing that doesn’t show up until the final cleaning, other times it’s a minor
scratch on the surface caused during the grouting or cleaning process by a tiny grain of sand. It’s impossible to prevent 100% of the
time.
A the risk of causing years of bad luck, we have gone through the painful experience of breaking out a mirror and replacing it due to
what we considered to be an unacceptable scratch.
One of the first mirrors Chris made was a Memory Mirror, filled with little mementos from our past, to hang in our own entry hall. I
walked by that mirror for over a year, pausing sometimes to examine something I had forgotten was in the mirror (that’s the way they
are) and never seen a flaw in the mirror until one day I put it on my well-lit work table to clean prior to getting some really good close-
up photos of it. There are flaws and minuscule scratches that I could see at just the right angle, with just the right light, that are not
seen unless you’re looking for them! Know this…
Your artwork will never be shipped out with a scratch or flaw in the mirror that we would not accept in our own home.
Take an honest assessment of your personality. Please don’t take this as an insult, but, If you are the type of person who will focus
on a minuscule flaw in spite of all the creativity that surrounds it, you should probably consider another art form.
What is included in the shipping cost?
Each mirror is a unique work of art. We go to great lengths to ensure its safe inside the package. A large piece will involve about
$30 worth of packaging products alone, which we consider part of the expense that enables us to do business with people across
the country.
You’ll find foam to protect the more fragile front, and extra layers of cardboard padding to protect the front, sides and back. We allow
space on all sides of the piece as a buffer zone for drops and dents.
The cost depends on the size and weight of the packaged mirror and your location. Remember these pieces are made of glass,
stone, steel, and that grout is basically concrete. Some of the mirrors are heavy and all but the smaller ones are charged for
oversized/overweight shipping.
What is your shipping policy?
We can ship any of our artworks to the contiguous 48 United States and Alaska. We can ship only the smaller and medium sized
works to Hawaii, the larger artworks may require additional air freight charges, if it's even possible.
We have a UPS daily pickup account at our other business, www.candlesoylutions.com which gives us (you) better rates for most of
the artwork, and are willing to take the large, heavier packages. US Postal will take the smaller works if going to Hawaii.
Your Mosaic Mirror Art takes some time and care to package properly for shipping and usually ships within 1-2 days of purchase
funding.
We ship under the agreement of UPS, Terms and Conditions and may require either a Direct Signature or Adult Signature as proof
of delivery. You may have the option to add a delivery appointment time or evening delivery by paying a Premium Service Upgrade.
We'll get a delivery confirmation from the shipper, at which time you become solely responsible for the package. Mosaic Mirror Art is
not responsible for theft off your doorstep.
The buyer is responsible for all shipping costs, including any additional costs charged by the shipper for rural delivery (for example),
multiple delivery attempts, and return shipping. Shippers will typically not insure artwork or mirrors even when you pay the
insurance. We suggest you contact your home owners insurance for a rider to cover the excess amount. We will make every
attempt at keeping photographs of your artwork just prior to closing the package and of the package prior to shipping. If the package
arrives damaged, since it is out of our care and control after we ship it, the buyer will make a claim against the shipper. If the work
can be repaired we will do so at the shipper, the buyer or the buyer’s insurance expense, provided the work is returned to us freight
prepaid and freight back to the buyer is paid.
We will not ship to a PO Box address and will not ship C.O.D. If you pay with a VISA or other Credit Card, the billing address must
match the mailing address on the credit card for address verification.
If you pay using Paypal, we are required to only ship to your Paypal Verified Address. Please check your Paypal account before
buying.
You are welcome to take the time to shop for other shipping options. Keep in mind that you will not get an accurate cost estimate
without the PACKAGED size and weight. Just send us an email and we’ll get the info to you ASAP.
What are mosaic mirrors made from?
We start with a backing board shape. The smaller shapes are usually made with Medium Density Fiberboard, or MDF, a composite
wood product similar to particle board. It's made out of wood waste fibers glued together with resin, heat, and pressure. MDF is
found in many home applications, from cabinetry, in furniture, shelving, laminate flooring, decorative moldings, and doors. For us,
MDF has some advantages over plywood. It's very smooth because the wood fibers used in its manufacture are uniform and fine.
When sawed, the ends have a smooth cut instead of jagged or splintered edges that give us slivers. We prefer using MDF over
regular lumber because it has a lower impact on the environment. MDF is solely made from waste products, the leftover scraps that
would otherwise be dumped in a landfill.
The medium and larger mosaics are usually cut from 5/8” or 3/4” exterior-grade plywood, in spite of the sliver hazards we encounter,
because the larger mirrors need a more rigid backing and since the larger mirrors are heavier, the plywood backing will also hold
the D-Ring Hangers without risk of the screws pulling out.
We use a non-toxic glue made specifically for arts and crafts that holds all the various materials that go into the mosaic patterns you
see, then we fill in the empty space using sanded and colored grout.
We use a wide variety of items to create the mosaic; Stained glass, antiques, stones, jewelry, watches, hardware, coins, beads,
utensils, tools, game pieces, keys, pins, poker chips, bottle caps, dice, knitting needles, upholstery tacks, door knobs, old car and
bike parts, just about anything that we think belongs on the mirror we’re working on!
How should I hang my Mosaic Mirror Art?
Some of the small mirrors have a machined grove in the back to hang on a single nail or screw. Otherwise, all other mirrors will
come with the D-Rings or heavy duty stainless steel hanging wire already installed on the back. The wires allow level hanging of the
oval and smaller mirrors on one sturdy hanger. The mirrors that don’t come with wires are intended to be hung on the hangers.
Never hang on a Mosaic Mirror on a nail or screw directly into wallboard as they simply won’t support the weight for long. Of course,
putting a heavy nail or screw into a stud behind the wallboard is always going to be the strongest hanger. Since the stud never
seems to be right where we want it at our house we recommend Ooks brand hangers; Ook Shield Hangers for plaster or wallboard
leave only tiny little holes in the wall when moved. The Kid Safe and Security Hangers for keep the D-Rings from coming off the
hanger (which would be wise if you live in a quake zone!). They also have similar products for hanging in concrete and brick walls,
and the larger packages come with easy instructions.
Take precautions during hanging. The medium and large mirrors can be heavy and awkward so you may need help. Objects on the
artwork can be sharp so be cautious how you carry it. Non-slip gloves are helpful. Know where you’re going to put the art before you
pick it up. Place folded towels on the floor to protect both the floor and the artwork from damage, but don’t let it slip and fall. Place a
towel over the top edge to keep the work from scratching the wall.
And of course, be careful how you hold the mirror so you don't break a piece off.
Any special concerns about cleaning my Mosaic Mirror?
We ship your mirror completely detailed clean. After you take it out of the shipping container and hang it, you'll want to clean the
packing marks off the mirror itself and any finger prints you might notice on the stained glass to make it sparkle.
It's normal to get a little loose sand from the grout when you wipe the mirror clean so be very careful because it only takes one grain
with a heavy hand to damage the glass. To clean the mirror without scratching it we recommend spraying your favorite window
cleaner solution onto some paper towels (spraying the entire mirror won't hurt it, but may require you to wipe all the little stained
glass and other mosaic pieces afterwards). Using this dampened paper towel, wipe the mirror clean with a light hand and listen for
any little scratchy sound, a sign you've picked up a grain of sand and should turn the towel over. Use dry paper towels to lightly buff
the mirror clean and dry. You may notice some minute mirror flaws after cleaning; this is simply unavoidable. Please see the notes
above.
To clean very small stained glass or other small mosaic pieces wipe in one direction with paper towel over a finger tip, and a drop of
window cleaner, and buff clean and dry in one direction with a dry piece on another finger. Really small pieces can be wiped clean
with a dampened Q-Tip and dried with a finger tip paper towel.
I broke a piece off my Mosaic Mirror Art. Can I repair it myself?
Probably. The mosaic pieces that are set in grout are pretty strong, but be cautious that you don't snag a piece of jewelery or other
mosaic piece and break it off. An example would be a broach glued to a piece of glass. The Weldbond cement we use is pretty
strong but to keep it less noticeable, we aren't able to use very much of it.
To repair something like this you'll want to buy some Weldbond glue. You can find it online by doing a search. You might also find it
at a woodworking or stained glass supply store near you. Clean any glue bits left on both surfaces, lay the mirror flat on a towel or
carpet where it can stay for a day. Use as little Weldbond glue as you can and let it set for a day before hanging. It comes out white
but will dry clear and will be at it's strongest after 5 days.
